Biography (pdf-Datei)
Matthias Kirschnereit is one of today's leading German pianists of his generation. His recording of W. A. Mozart's complete piano concertos with the Bamberg Symphonics in the Mozart-year 2006 received the highest praise from the international press. Likewise on a track of success is the complete recording of Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's piano concertos together with the Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie Chemnitz under Frank Beermann, which has been published on the occasion of Mendelssohn’s 200th birthday in 2009 (ArteNova/SONY Music). Along side the piano concertos no. 1 and 2, the CD also features the world premiere recording of the reconstructed Piano concerto E Minor (version: Larry Todd). In the category "World Premiere Recording of the Year", the CD has been awarded the ECHO Classic 2009. The live premiere of the piano concerto no. 3 at the "Winterzauber" festival in Bad Kissingen at the beginning of 2009 was a highly acclaimed success.
Up to now, Matthias Kirschnereit has recorded more than 20 CDs. His discography includes recordings of early piano compositions by Johannes Brahms, Schumann's Fantasy op. 17 as well as selected works by Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.
His great successes at the German Music Competition in Bonn, the International Concours Géza Anda in Zurich and the Australian International Piano Competition in Sydney marked the beginning of his international concert career, which has since then taken him to all five continents. Leading European ensembles such as the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Residentie Orkest Den Haag, Bamberg Symphonics, the Radio-Symphony Orchestras Stuttgart and Leipzig as well as the St. Petersburg Philharmonics have already invited him. Furthermore, being a soloist likewise popular among the audience and orchestras, Matthias Kirschnereit regularly cooperates with orchestras in the USA, Japan and other Asian countries. Conductors such as B. Y. Temirkanov, C. Hogwood, R. Kofman, M. Sanderling. C. St. Clair and J. v. Zweden are among his partners.
The 2009/10 season starts with international appearances, e. g. with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra in Los Angeles and the National Symphony Orchestra in Taipeh. On the occasion of the jubilee season of the Chamber Orchestra C. P. E. Bach, he follows an invitation to the Konzerthaus Berlin.
As a welcome guest, Matthias Kirschnereit regularly plays at the renowned festivals of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein, at the Piano Festival Ruhr and Schubertiade Feldkirch. He is a passionate chamber musician, playing with artists such as Christian Tetzlaff, the Szymanowski Quartet and the Vogler Quartet. In 2004 he has founded the Trio Mirabeau together with Nicola Jürgensen (clarinet) and Volker Jacobsen (viola).
Since 1997, Matthias Kirschnereit has been a professor at the newly founded Academy of Music and Theater in Rostock. Meanwhile, many of his students are prize winners at international competitions.
Born in Westphalia, Kirschnereit grew up in the Namibian desert and began studying piano at the Detmold Music Academy with Professor Renate Kretschmar-Fischer. Many years of cooperation with Claudio Arrau, Bruno Leonardo Gelber, Murray Perahia, Oleg Maisenberg and Murray Perahia left an indelible artistic impression on him. The intensive cooperation with Sandor Végh and the Camerata Academica Salzburg has been of sustainable significance for his understanding of Mozart.
